This week will be focusing entirely on DC. To kick it off we will talk about Batman #29. This issue once again proves that Tom King is one of the best in the business. This issue is all about a dinner set up by Bruce Wayne to make peace between Joker and Riddler, and it is magnificent! The way that Riddler cuts to the heart of who the Joker is stuns me! He determines that Joker has no true pain in his life that made him how he was, but is just the way he is because he wants to be. This is echoed by the way Joker just doesn’t care; cause all he wants is to kill Batman. This issue has Bruce Wayne acting as a mediator and promising 1 billion dollars to the person he deems can kill the bat. This is actually how Batman decides who he will support in this war. What makes Tom Kings words really pop is the artwork by Mikel Janin. This is breathtaking, he has a few two-page spreads that made me stop and marvel at them, they were just so amazing! This issue is once again one of the most amazing Batman issues I have read.
Now moving onto Dark Nights: Metal, DC’s latest crossover event. This kicked off this week with its first main issue and it is a doozy! This issue features a megazord made up of the Justice League robots. It has the return of Red tornado, Hawkgirl (without her wings), the Blackhawks, and The Challengers of the Unknown, Multiversity and Sandman. This issue is so jammed packed full of DC comics hints and easter eggs that it hits you like a storm. This is without evening touching the great story that this is weaving. It is something that we have never seen before and will be establishing a new status quo for DC for the next 50 years. It is hard to tell if Batman is the hero of the villain, but I can tell that things are about to go very bad for everyone.
This week’s big surprise in DC comes from Detective Comics. The vicious AI, Ascalon, after his defeat at the hands of Jean-Paul Valley (back in a very cool Batman Azrael suit) reveals to Batman that Tim Drake is still alive! Now we all know that now the Batman has this knowledge he won’t stop until he brings him back. If you look at the way he hunted for a way to bring Damien back, imagine what he will do for someone who isn’t even actually dead. Tim Drake will be coming back soon and that is good to hear cause with the events of Dark Nights: Metal coming up, Batman is gonna need his anchor very soon. Also check out: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, The Flash, Justice League of America, Birds of Prey, Action Comics, and of course check out Tom King’s Mister Miracle!
In Marvel, something happened that I have just been waiting for 30 issues. In Amazing Spider-Man Peter Parker was fighting the new and improved Doc Ock and ended up sacrificing his entire company to keep Doc Ock from taking over. I have been waiting for this because it returns Spider-Man to who he is suppose to be: a down on his luck guy who always fights the good fight, even when his entire life is down in the dumps. I have never liked him as the business mogul and tony stark type character, so I’m happy that is done. Also check out: Secret Empire, Defenders, Generations: Phoenix/Jean Grey, Old Man Logan and Inhumans: Once and Future Kings.
