We are back again with the Comic Column!
This week we will start out with DC! A strong week for DC this week, with flagship titles like Batman, Superman and Justice League. While Batman battles Bane and Superman and the Justice League battle time its self, the one comic that really stood out was Nightwing. This issue of Nightwing was all kinds of fun, mixed with some sweet action. This issue felt very classic and had some great nostalgia moments between Damien and Dick. Finally it also made us feel like Dick was growing up. When he finds out that Shawn is pregnant he realizes that he is an adult and that this might not be a problem, but a happy moment. This is touching because it shows progression that we rarely see from comic book heroes. Unfortunately one comic that really isn't doing well for DC is Cyborg. This comic has been bombing since issue #1. The problem is that Cyborg is just not a strong enough hero on his own to keep his own comic going. He doesn't have the rouges gallery or the emotional depth to have solo success. A prime example of this is from this weeks comic. The villain they introduced was the Lord of Rats, a overweight drug dealer who controlled rats. I feel like that really says all there is too say about Cyborg.
Marvel was another average week. Comics like Deadpool and Doctor Strange were good, while comics like Avengers and Clone Conspiracy struggled. Deadpool kicked off its crossover event on a good note with having monsters getting ready to invade New York, and showing classic monsters like Frankenstein and Invisible Man. It ended strongly by introducing Blade into the crossover, which has me looking forward to the rest of the crossover. Doctor Strange was an exciting read due to the interesting team up with Thor. This added a new dynamic by having Thor combine her medical and magical knowledge. The issued finished by setting up for a big finale that will feature Doctor Strange preforming an exorcism. On the downside, Avengers is still suffering from a convoluted time travel plot, as well as boring storytelling that lulls me to sleep while I read it. Clone Conspiracy: Omega was also another mediocre wrap up for the event that just went over the finale again, for the third time, really not adding a lot to it. I really hope Marvel comics start to pick up soon and that the Secret Empire event will be their version of Rebirth.
