Last night I went and saw the new Saban's Power Rangers movie, and I left it feeling pretty good about it.
Power Rangers is obviously is a movie made for a younger audience, but also has some grown up tones to it, as well as grown up jokes. Dacre Montgomery (Jason/Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), and RJ Cyler (Billy/Blue Ranger) killed their roles in this movie. RJ Cyler has to be one of my favorite upcoming actors right now, he's absolutely hilarious and brings a lot of fun into this movie and his first big role Me Earl and The Dying Girl (which is also an amazing movie, you should check it out). He was easily my favorite character, and they did something very interesting with him. They put him on The Autism Spectrum, which is something I would have never expected and was actually really cool. Dacre Montgomery is also a really stand out character, probably because he is the Red Ranger and is pretty much the focal point of the entire movie, but even besides that he did a fantastic job making you care about his character and really the whole team in general. Naomi Scott was super badass and also did a great job making you care about not only herself, but the rest of the team as well. Becky G. (Trini/Yellow Ranger), and Ludi Lin (Zack/Black Ranger) weren't as great as the three others, but were still interesting enough that they didn't bring down the movie at all. Also fun fact, Trini the Yellow Ranger is the first openly gay superhero to ever be on the big screen!
The villain, Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa) was definitely a low point in the film. And I think Elizabeth Banks is a great actress, but she wasn't given a lot to work with in this movie, her character was just kind of boring. Which is honestly the biggest issue with superhero villains. The "Evil Master Plan" was also kind of a bore, I would have much rather watched them learn to live with their powers, but its a Power Rangers movie so its gotta end with Mega-Zords and giant monsters right?
Overall this was a pretty fun flick to watch on a rainy Thursday night, and Rj Cyler will kill you with laughs.
I'm giving Power Rangers a 6/10.
